Briggs and Stratton is a name that is known world wide as a manufacturer of engines that are both reliable and long lasting in industrial and domestic use.
The company was founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1908 by Stephen F Briggs who was an inventor and Harold M Stratton who was an investor. This started as an informal partnership that grew into the listed company known as Briggs and Stratton today.
Stephen Briggs and Harold Stratton originally set out to produce automobiles and in 1922 set a record by producing the lowest priced car at a price of $125. The car was called the “Red Bug”
They soon gave up the automobile business and began concentrating on engines for generators and motors for washing machines and refrigerators.
During World War 2 they developed a generator which was widely used by troops in action.
After the war the company revolutionized the lawnmower industry by developing the lightweight aluminum engine. These engines went on to power the rotary lawnmowers, which industry increased when the lawn and garden market grew as a result of the rapid growth of suburbs.
In the year 2000 Briggs and Stratton under the leadership of John Shiely decided to expand their product base and acquired a company called Generic Portable Products Systems producing pressure washers, generators and pumps.
So from those pioneering days of Stephen Briggs and Harold Stratton 102 years ago the company has grown into the multimillion dollar company as it is today. The Briggs and Stratton Engines are manufactured world wide and in fact they are the world’s largest producer of air cooled gasoline engines for outdoor power equipment Over 11 million engines are sold annually.
